One Idea Turns into Many…

The idea for a production company was formed in 2004, then as I was doing business with clients, startup companies, small to medium sized businesses  were in need of many media services. Digital South Media Group LLC was formed in Myrtle Beach South Carolina in 2006.

Digital South Media Group offers professional video production and wordpress design and web solutions for a variety of business, marketing, and technology-related needs. When it comes to a *One-Stop Shop” that focuses on branding your message and ideas for your business; we are the company to call whether you are just starting out or need an online media boost to bring your company to the next level of success.

“Zoom with your feet not your lens, that way when your filming a subject you have great natual sound audio as well !”

History

-TV8My career began when I was 16 shooting wddding videos on the weekend for a company Chappaqua New York. Being a tall and large kid the camera seems like an extension of my arm almost weightless to me. So at an early age I was able to concentrate more on what and how I was shooting subjects.

Video and still photography continued on my own with freinds making short films, and a high school photography class at St. Luke’s in New Caanan, CT. Where my still photography skills were enhanced by certain projects assigned and by the use in the 35mm darkroom lab. Acquiring more skills with a camera takes time to learn the theories but apply them and know how to use your camera well. At the same time things were changing from analog to digital cameras. The same principles apply in the field but you had to learn how to use the new cameras.

At Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA is where it all came together. At the time there was a few pieces of equipment SVHS camera and Video Toaster  with and VHS A/B ROLL Record to edit projects on. at the time it was the best thing. My original plan was to become a Studio Engineer to record albums and music. You had to make your own major and really hustle outside the University to learn what to do. During my senior year at got an internship with WGAL-TV8 in Lancaster PA. The ride to get there took 2 hours each way every day to a new station to learn the basics.

Two Countries, One Island of Fun

After wearing 10 hats directing, producing, filming, editing, and marketing a National fishing show, Southern Saltwater with Harry Evans, it was time for a much needed break. I slowly started developing my own production studio. At this time Leigh Vaters a friend from WPDE-TV approached me to do a project in Saint Maarten in the Caribbean for a client of his Hayden Cline. And off to the Caribbean we went for three years filming and editing a travel hotel program showcased within the hotel rooms. Each hotel we create  separate program for and then created 6-10 commercials every two weeks to showcase what to do and see on the island. This was a great project and I think still exists in the hotel today.

The Journey To the NC High Country

The journey to the High Country in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains started in 2007. While talking to one of my clients Litchfield Real Estate, the owner asked me if i traveled outside the are to do some video production work. I agreed to the job and drove to Blowing Rock North Carolina during the most dense fog and could not see anything and almost drove off the cliffs a few times. Finally got to the Holiday Inn and got some sleep. When I awoke the next morning and had some breakfast I noticed a lot of travel rack cards everywhere in the hotel. In addition while driving to the real estate I was about to shoot were breathtaking picturesque views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was so beautiful I thought I was in heaven! As I shot the video for the real estate developer I felt at home and realized many things about the area. It reminded me of where I grew up in Westchester New York and the Coast of Maine where I spent summers as a child with my family. My next thought was lets take the Caribbean project to the mountains. I then started commuting to Boone North Carolina once a month for a week for a year and a half producing Mountain TV Guide in 20 hotels in the High Country.

Mountain TV Guide, Blue Ridge Travel Network, and Motorcycle Rides

Mountain TV Guide was basically taking the Caribbean project of travel in the hotels and bringing the idea to the High Country. I had over 20 hotels at one point and had a great TV program showing where to go and where you next adventure was going to be! Then the cable companies transferred all the regular channels to HDTV Channels. So there was a big decision I had to make. Spend a lot of money or ride the NEW wave of video on the internet. This made more sense as I could reach more people with an online directory of information with a travel show attached to it. So I stepped backed an punted! It took some time for the technology to catch up but it was a good decision and look how video is everywhere today! Things shifted very much into web design and taking on clients and helping businesses in getting them noticed on the world wide web.

So here I am today with two very big website networks Over 50 travel websites after 16 years of creating and adding infomration putting a total 1.5 million in time and money gaining traffic all over the web. I have connected the Blue Ridge Travel along with the Motorcycle Travel Network and selling advertising and helping many clients along the way.

MORE BOOKINGS THAN VRBO, AIRBNB, AND TRIPADVISOR

My name is Annette Cates (owner) of Massanutten Springs Vacation Rental Properties along with #1 Rock Tavern River Kamp. Several years ago I received a phone call from Robert Somes introducing me to his online travel website to advertise my cabin rentals and campground by listing them on his directories for the Blue Ridge Mountains. As he explained the benefits – my interest was peaked! I have been with him since that day, since he started building his network and the many different travel websites. Now his websites produce more traffic and bookings for my cabin rental business and campground than vrbo, trip advisor, even Airbnb.  I highly recommend taking his phone call and becoming a part of his network!
